On Friday, April 24th, the first of a series of virtual panels was live streamed, as part of Foundation for Puerto Rico\u2019s (FPR) efforts to keep the island informed, particularly the business ecosystem, on the effects of the pandemic at a local level and the current aids for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Puerto Rico. <\/em><\/p><\/div>

    On the panel \u201cSMBs\u00a0limited\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0SBA\u00a0funds,\u201d experts discussed the obstacles business owners have faced in accessing U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loans locally.\u00a0Jorge Silva\u00a0Puras,\u00a0attorney and\u00a0former\u00a0administrator of the SBA Regional Office for New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, began by presenting statistics from the government agency, where it\u00a0established that Puerto Rico has only received three of more than 26,000 loans nationwide.\u00a0As well, Pablo\u00a0DeFilippi, senior vice president of Membership and Network Engagement of\u00a0Inclusiv, elaborated on the controversy surrounding the exclusion of cooperatives on the island in order to participate in the first round of SBA aid.\u00a0Likewise, he informed that unlike the first round,\u00a0in this second stage, eight cooperatives certified as SBA Lenders will be able to participate. These are\u00a0the following:\u00a0CamuyCoop, Caribe FCU,\u00a0CooPACA, Cooperativa Jes\u00fas\u00a0Obrero, Cooperativa Oriental, Cooperativa Zeno\u00a0Gand\u00eda,\u00a0MaunaCoop\u00a0and\u00a0VegaCoop.\u00a0<\/p>

    Nerma\u00a0Albertorio, executive director of Centro\u00a0para\u00a0Emprendedores,\u00a0shared\u00a0her experience of supporting 33 local SMBs in the process of applying for SBA grants under the Payment Protection Program, where only 10 were approved.\u00a0She also elaborated on the problems they faced with commercial banks and\u00a0lenders,\u00a0due to\u00a0not\u00a0having\u00a0the infrastructure and knowledge to process these requests in an agile and efficient manner, directly affecting the business owners. Finally, Annie Mayol, president of the Foundation for Puerto Rico, emphasized that the business should begin its process in the banking institution where\u00a0there\u2019s already a\u00a0business relationship. In addition, she highlighted the importance of not requesting your loan under this program in more than one bank at a time, since it can be counterproductive.\u00a0She concluded by underlining the importance of affected businesses that are requesting financial aid in seeking and obtaining technical assistance from non-profit organizations such as Centro\u00a0para\u00a0Emprendedores\u00a0and FPR, among others.\u00a0<\/p>

    Panelists recommended:\u00a0<\/p>

    • Businesses with fewer employees should have priority, following the principle that SBA and its loans require.\u00a0<\/p><\/li>

    • Commercial banks and cooperatives\u00a0must\u00a0be more agile and prioritize how to get small businesses to gain access to these grants and, therefore, to capital.\u00a0<\/p><\/li>

    • Businesses need to ensure they have their documents ready, including their financial statements, in order to move fast and apply.\u00a0<\/p><\/li>

    • Technical assistance is essential,\u00a0not only for the process of how to apply for this aid, but also to ensure that once the aid is obtained, they can use the capital in the most efficient way possible,\u00a0overcoming this crisis.\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
