I&#8217;ll keep it real with you &#8211; the situation isn&#8217;t great right now. Puerto Rico suffers from a shortage of healthcare workers, especially specialists. The ratio of primary care physicians to residents is only half the national average. Hospital closures after Hurricane Maria exacerbated issues. With fewer workers, the remaining staff face high workloads and long hours, leading to burnout. For patients, this means long waits for appointments and treatment. A 2017 study found primary care appointment wait times in Puerto Rico averaged 32 days, nearly 4 times the national average. In the emergency room, waits of 8-12 hours are common.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">Sure artificial intelligence will not solve every problem, but there are many ways that it can transform Healthcare in a practical way. Think about it &#8211; AI systems could help doctors and nurses spot diseases early, figure out the best treatments, and closely monitor patients over time. All that admin work? AI can take care of it so healthcare workers have more time for patients. AI chatbots and virtual assistants could answer basic health questions, freeing up staff to handle complex cases. AI decision support tools could ensure the best care decisions are made every time.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">For mental health in particular, AI has huge promise. Virtual therapy programs and AI apps that track moods, sleep, and symptoms could help identify those at risk sooner and provide useful statistics that show which treatments are working. I read an article about Chelsey Serrano, a local doctor right here in Puerto Rico\u00a0that is using virtual reality to treat eating disorders. Sure, that may sound like fun and games but the reality is that this technology can and is making a real difference in Healthcare.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">There&#8217;s definitely a long road ahead, but we have many forward thinking entrepreneurs using AI today right here in Puerto Rico! Startups like BrainHI &#8211; an AI virtual receptionist is helping healthcare providers keep in touch with patients. The company&#8217;s virtual receptionist picks up missed calls and schedules appointments, helping to alleviate the burden on healthcare providers. Today, BrainHI has helped over 1.6 million patients schedule their appointments, demonstrating the transformative potential of AI in healthcare<\/div><div class=\"scriptor-paragraph\">Overall, AI has real potential to improve efficiency, accessibility and outcomes. As we build better solutions, Puerto Rico and communities everywhere can look forward to a future with healthcare that works better for everyone.
