San Juan, Puerto Rico \u2013 Foundation for Puerto Rico (FPR) announced the launch of the Community Innovation Hub, a groundbreaking initiative designed to address the critical challenges affecting sustainable development and the resilience of rural communities in the eastern region of Puerto Rico.<\/p>

For the past five years, FPR has worked in the region through initiatives such as the Bottom-Up Destination Recovery Initiative, Destino 191, and the Whole Community Resilience Planning (WCRP). This experience has allowed the organization to gain a deep understanding of the region\u2019s challenges and opportunities, laying the groundwork for this new development phase through the Community Innovation Hub.<\/p>

“True development begins when we imagine and work collectively to generate solutions. With the Community Innovation Hub, we are betting on the transformative power of ideas\u2014the creative spark that emerges when communities, experts, and sectors come together with purpose. This initiative represents an investment in the collective intelligence of our people and their ability to design bold solutions that drive sustainable, fair, and lasting development in Puerto Rico\u2019s eastern region,” said Jon Borschow, founder and CEO of FPR.<\/p>

For her part, Anneliz Oliver, Program Manager at FPR, stated that “the Hub is the result of years of grassroots work in the eastern region and close collaboration with communities and local leaders. We believe in the power of co-creation, and that collaboration is key to identifying and developing innovative solutions that address their specific needs.”<\/p>

The Hub will work directly on the challenges faced by the municipalities of Can\u00f3vanas, Ceiba, Culebra, Fajardo, Humacao, Juncos, Las Piedras, Lo\u00edza, Luquillo, Maunabo, Naguabo, R\u00edo Grande, San Lorenzo, Yabucoa, and Vieques. Through working groups, workshops, focus groups, and conversations with key stakeholders, the initiative will promote the co-creation of solutions for ten identified challenges in the region, which include:<\/p>

  • Lack of alignment and coordination among stakeholders and local leaders<\/li>
  • Unsustainable management of natural and cultural assets<\/li>
  • Limited transportation alternatives and connectivity at the regional scale<\/li>
  • Limited human capital<\/li>
  • Lack of Tourism-based product development<\/li>
  • Barriers to doing business<\/li>
  • Branding and marketing deficiencies<\/li>
  • Limited visibility of regional visitation trends and travel statistics<\/li>
  • Inadequate waste management<\/li>
  • Environmental hazards and vulnerability<\/li><\/ul>

    “The Community Innovation Hub aims to develop at least ten high-impact conceptual solutions that address these key challenges. Additionally, we anticipate that 50% of these solutions will be referred for funding, policy changes, product or service development, or other essential steps for effective implementation,” added Oliver.<\/p>

    “Considering the potential of the eastern region as a sustainable tourism destination, structural challenges persist that limit its ability to attract and retain visitors sustainably. This is why collaboration among the three key audiences\u2014regional media, stakeholders, and subject matter experts\u2014has the power to overcome obstacles and transform the region into a driver of sustainable development. We are convinced that with active audience participation and the application of innovative strategies, we can strengthen the visitor economy in the region and generate a long-term positive impact,” added Javier De Jes\u00fas Mart\u00ednez, Innovation and Design Strategist at FPR.<\/p>

    In recent months, FPR has held meetings with various regional mayors, representatives from academia, non-governmental organizations working in the east, and regional media, among others, creating a diverse ecosystem to integrate the Hub. So far, the organization has established several collaboration agreements, including a partnership with the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, the municipality of Ceiba, and several regional media outlets, who will act as collaborators by sharing their extensive knowledge on the issues affecting the region and contributing to the development of solutions for the identified challenges. Additionally, the organization has already established direct communication channels with 8 municipalities in the region.<\/p>

    The official launch event of the Community Innovation Hub will take place on Tuesday, April 23, at the Medio Mundo and Daguao Visitor Center, located at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Ceiba. The event is open to the public, with a special invitation extended to residents of the eastern region, municipal representatives, non-profit organizations, businesses, and other key regional stakeholders. It will be an opportunity to learn firsthand about the Hub\u2019s objectives, participate in dialogue sessions, and join the co-creation process of solutions that drive sustainable and equitable development.<\/p>

    This initiative is being developed as part of the USDA’s Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) program.
