Today, we celebrate World Tourism Day under the theme “For People, For Planet, For Prosperity.” In Puerto Rico, where the beauty of our landscapes equals the richness of our culture, tourism has become the engine of our economic recovery. The Visitor Economy (VE), which considers the direct impact of traveler spending and the multiplier effect it has on local economic activity, generates more than 110,000 jobs in the island. This powerful economic engine has become a shining beacon of opportunity for our future. On this day, it is important to reflect on how we can ensure that this economic activity benefits our people and protects our environment and the planet. To achieve this, we must harness entrepreneurship and the powers granted by innovation, including tools like Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The modern traveler craves a unique experience, a connection with nature, with other humans, immersed in an authentic and vibrant culture. We propose that it be the local entrepreneur who creates these unparalleled encounters, the visionary who conceives eco-friendly accommodations, and the technological pioneer who harnesses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to redefine experiences and make our history and culture come alive. These entrepreneurs are at the heart of our visitor economy, injecting life, diversity, and individualization into the already rich experiential texture of our destination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Let’s take the example of Pedro Cruz, founder of DreamWalks, who has developed experiences using AI tools where you can interact with statues of historical figures that come to life and speak to and educate you. This technology allows any object to come to life and engage with visitors through their mobile phones. These interactions have the potential to be personalized around the individual’s historical or cultural interests. They could even answer questions and engage in dialogues to greatly enhance the visitor experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

AI has the potential to revolutionize the visitor experience, making it more personalized and efficient. Imagine a travel itinerary tailored not only to your preferences but also in harmony with destination conservation efforts. Envision a seamless booking process powered by AI that promotes local businesses and artisans. Picture a virtual tour guide that not only provides historical context, but also encourages cultural exchange and maximizes benefits by efficiently managing the distribution of visitors across our geography.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The possibilities for innovation in the Visitor Economy are limitless, but they require a joint effort to bridge the gap between tradition and technology. They require us to see AI not as a replacement for human touch but as a complement that amplifies our ability to create exceptional visitor experiences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At this critical moment, let us seize this opportunity to invest in prosperity. Let us empower the entrepreneurs who dare to dream of a visitor economy that enriches not only our communities but also positions Puerto Rico at the forefront of global tourism. Let us champion innovation, recognizing it as the cornerstone upon which the future of our archipelago will be built.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
