Naguabo, PR – \u00a0Foundation for Puerto Rico\u2019s team joined forces with the Puerto Rico Association of Plastic Artists (AAPPR) to create an indoor mural at the La Mina Community Center, in Cubuy, in Barrio R\u00edo Blanco, Naguabo, as part of the initiatives established by Destino 191<\/a>. These efforts pave the way for the fourth and final multisectoral meeting taking place on Friday, October 20th, 2023.\u00a0<\/p>

The Comit\u00e9 Desarrollo Barrio Cubuy, along with the R\u00edo Blanco Community Group, community leaders, and FPR, will hold a fourth multisectoral meeting to celebrate the culmination of the Destino 191 program, which conducted a series of development training sessions and planning process for the destination. During the event, the planning undertaken and the development of the vision for Destino 191 towards the southern entrance of El Yunque, will be shared through a Rural Placemaking Plan and the Rural Placemaking toolkit for Puerto Rico.\u00a0<\/p>

“After two years of teamwork with the community, we will be able to present the result of multiple initiatives at a multisectoral meeting. In this last meeting under the program, the final documents of the Rural Placemaking Plan for Destino 191 and the Rural Placemaking Toolkit for Puerto Rico will be presented,” said Alexandra Mihailovic, Program Manager at FPR.<\/p>

Over the past two years, the Destino 191 project has focused on understanding the desires and needs of the community, training community leaders in areas of economic development and planning, and fostering collaboration among multiple stakeholders to revitalize public spaces shared by communities along Route 191. As part of this effort, the FPR team joined forces with the Association of Plastic Artists of Puerto Rico (AAPPR) to create an interior mural at the La Mina community center. As part of their voluntary initiatives, artist Marie Court, along with artists Orlando Castro and Thomas Nicholson, participated in the “Arte en Comunidad: Pintemos Nuestros Murales” event, which attracted dozens of volunteers to paint this mural and a second one on Route 191, the latter led by Jaime Diaz from CROM\u00c1POLIS. Organizations present at this voluntary event included Coraz\u00f3n Latino and Para La Naturaleza.<\/p>

AAPPR completed its efforts on the interior mural on Saturday, September 23rd, while the community, along with the US Forest Service, the Municipality of Naguabo, FPR, Coraz\u00f3n Latino, Love in Motion, and other organizations, celebrated National Public Lands Day at the Sabana River Recreational Area, another attraction offered by Destino 191.<\/p>

“Part of the work we have done with the community has been to identify opportunities in Cubuy and revitalize spaces so they can be better prepared to market the destination and attract visitors. Today, thanks to the community, volunteers, plastic artists, and the CROM\u00c1POLIS team, the Cubuy neighborhood has new attractions that add even more beauty to the area and will welcome all those who want to explore the southern entrance to El Yunque,” said Mariny Vazquez on National Public Lands Day.<\/p>

Destino 191: “El Yunque del Caribe” is an initiative co-designed with community leaders aimed at developing and implementing an innovative plan to revitalize and promote Route 191 towards the southern entrance in Cubuy, R\u00edo Blanco, Naguabo, as a vibrant destination that provides an alternate access to the El Yunque National Forest. This program has been made possible through a collaborative partnership between FPR and the Rural Development Division of the United States Department of Agriculture, which obtained economic grant funding under the Rural Placemaking Innovation Challenge (RPIC) project to provide assistance in planning and developing destinations that help improve the social, cultural, and economic structures of rural communities. The initiative has also received support from A Friends’ Foundation and Fundaci\u00f3n Triple-S.<\/p>

The multisectoral meeting is open to residents of the Naguabo region, community leaders, and non-profit organizations working in the area.
