Have you felt the bombardment of news about artificial intelligence (AI)? Whether it makes you feel overwhelmed, excited, confused, or left behind, the transformative impact of this technology is profound, global, and inevitable. According to the World Economic Forum, the convergence of digital, physical, and biological systems such as AI comprises the fourth industrial revolution \u2013 and its speed, magnitude, and complexity render this transformation unprecedented in the history of humanity \u2013 an undeniable tsunami of change.<\/p>

Some of us observe the rapid progress of these tools and see opportunities to overcome current limitations and discover new ways to excel. Others see repercussions that could compromise our security and displace our workforce. Undoubtedly, these technologies carry risks, but we will not be able to avoid this great wave of change simply by erecting barriers or closing our eyes to reality. We must prepare to navigate it as active protagonists, rather than mere spectators. It behooves us to understand and take advantage of the opportunities that AI offers us, as individuals and as a society, to surpass our existing challenges and create positive change.<\/p>

Foundation for Puerto Rico (FPR) understands that it is essential to develop a shared vision of how these technologies will transform aspects of our lives and how we can position ourselves at the forefront of their constructive adoption. To achieve early and responsible adoption, it is vital to understand the visions of our community, increase our collective knowledge, dialogue about the opportunities and dangers, and design innovative, strategic, and transformative solutions to our collective challenges. Among the sectors where AI can have the greatest impact, we have identified health, education, government administration, resilience against climate change and natural events, agriculture, and the visitor economy, among others. For example, in health, we are experiencing a loss of medical professionals. Long waits put lives at risk. Imagine being able to communicate with our doctor at any hour, be attended to immediately, explain our problem, answer precise questions, undergo the necessary tests, and receive a diagnosis and treatment, all within the space of minutes, from our homes and facilitated by AI.<\/p>\n\n

In education, these adaptable technologies will be able to provide critical support to our teachers while at the same time maximizing the potential and addressing the individual challenges of each student, providing individualization to learning, in a democratized and equitable way. Imagine that each child has personalized tutoring and teaching adapted to their circumstances, abilities, and progress, regardless of their socioeconomic status, so that no child is left behind, all facilitated by AI.<\/p>\n\n

In the administration of government policies, AI will surely be able to improve efficiency, bureaucratic procedures, the management of public data, and decision-making based on that data. It will also help to propose and implement better public policies, draft and analyze legislation, and even provide better services to the public. But imagine the impact on our lives if, with the right permissions and intelligent design, crucial projects for the transformation of our communities could be designed and carried out in much less time, with fewer public resources, and with better outcomes.<\/p>\n\n

The time has come for exploration, collaboration, and innovation, always ensuring that the development, adoption, and use of AI is carried out in an inclusive and constructive manner. We have the opportunity to guide this moment of global transformation so that it benefits our entire Island. It is necessary that we act without delay to research, learn, dialogue, and act.
